— The Guardian, Slendytubbies III.

The Guardian, popularly known as the White Tubby, is the main protagonist of the Slendytubbies series.

He is a teletubby whose mission is to monitor the main quartet in the Main Land[2], thereby noting their state of health and prevent them from leaving the surface on which they are experimented on[3]. One night, Tinky Winky went crazy after eating a custard with his friends that day, and killed them one by one. The Guardian, seemingly clueless and unaware of the source that led to the incident, set out to collect the custards in order to find answers.

Physical Appearance

The Guardian is a humanoid covered in white fur with his face, including the inside of his large ears, depicted to have caucasian skin. He wears a cow-skinned hat on top of his head, the latter presumably belonging to Dipsy[4]. Depending on the game, the Guardian holds either a Flashlight or a Night Vision Camera. He does not have an antenna[1]. When the “Evil Ending” is achieved, The Guardian has exactly the same appearance as if he was alive — the only exception being a pale face and bloody, empty-looking eyes.

In the “Regretful Ending”, The Guardian lost his legs, and a slightly curved antenna grew on his head. He has black eyes with red pupils and sharp teeth, while his spine and organs drag on the ground as he moves. In the third game, the Crawler undergoes a redesign in which the second half of his body has grown into a sort of flesh-coloured parasitic creature, while keeping his cow-skinned hat atop his head.

Personality

The Guardian displays a variable personality, depending purely on the player’s dialogue choices. The spectrum of his attitude can go anywhere from rude and aggressive to reasonable and empathic.

For the most part, the Guardian tries to pursue his goal bravely, determined to find answers about the origins of the infection and other mysteries surrounding his own species. He also devoted himself to the subjects he observed, to the point of considering them as his friends even though they had never seen him.

Appearances

Slendytubbies

The Guardian is the playable character in the very first game. His goal is to move around the Main Land to collect ten custards that are scattered at many different places. However, this goal may be hindered by Tinky Winky, who is constantly chasing him and speeds up every time a custard is picked up. The only way to evade certain death is to avoid having visual contact with the latter.

The player can run for an unlimited time and fall from high altitudes without getting injured. There can be up to four players in Co-op mode, and three in Versus Mode.

Slendytubbies II

The Guardian is once again the player-character. This time, he has a Night Vision Camera that allows him to better find his way in the darkness and the mist. His objective is still to collect the custards — from one to twenty-five — through different locations, and trying to stay away from the different dangers that may lurk therein.

Slendytubbies 2D

Although the Guardian does not appear as the playable character, he is the default skin for “The Player”. The white teletubby himself is portrayed as an antagonist in Custard Reject Facility. He is also encountered in the Training Maze.

Like several other enemies, the Crawler constantly stalks the player from the beginning of the game. Once he reaches a certain radius, he will scream and accelerate as long as the player remains close by. He emits audible creeping sounds, alerting collectors of his presence. In the Training Maze, his chasing speed is identical to the player's, requiring the use of turns and walls to get away from him.

In the Versus mode of the Custard Reject Facility, the host of the room plays as the Crawler, whilst in the Training Maze, he is active alongside the host and a New Born.

Slendytubbies III

The Guardian reappears in Slendytubbies III in both Campaign and Multiplayer.

Campaign

Chapter 0 — “It Was Good”

At the beginning of Chapter 0, The Guardian is not the commendable character. He does his regular job; watch the main quartet, until things have gone wrong at the end of the chapter.

Chapter 1 — “A New Day”

After the massacre of Chapter 0, The Guardian tries to contact the Satellite Station for help, unfortunately, without success. He understood that he had to come to this place alone. With this idea in mind, he decided to bring his night vision camera with him, but the storage room was locked so it had to be opened with the door remote. Once the task is complete, he is about to leave when the power goes out and armless teletubbies start to roam the corridors.

Once outside, the Guardian must locate five custards and collect them in the Main Land. As he tries to obtain the last one, he encounters Tinky Winky standing in front of it. As the storm begins to thunder and the custard emits an unusual glow, Tinky Winky absorbs the substance and transforms into a huge, muscular monster. A chase sequence follows where the player must choose between the Cave or the Mountains.

Chapter 2 — “The Journey”

By choosing the Cave, the Guardian will go through a maze-like path. The path is full of dead ends, deep pits and above all danger of getting lost; the Cave Tubby. After two chases, the Guardian run away from the brown monster, thus reaches the exit.

By choosing the Mountains, the Guardian must pass a locked gate. Nevertheless, he is knocked out by a big creature and later wakes up near a warm campfire filled with bloody remains. He encounters a droid called Unit 437, that will inform him of a being it calls “The Master”, the creature that brought him down. After being chased by the aforementioned creature, the Guardian finds the gate and opens it thanks to a pipe. He then got his night vision camera back, slightly damaged, which he lost after being attacked.

As The Guardian heads towards the Outskirts, he discovers eight custards in the area and confronts Laa-Laa, in two possible states:

  • If the player decided not to wake her in Chapter 0, then Laa-Laa will be alive and able to speak. After several dialogue possibilities, both characters will collect the custards together until Laa-Laa feels feeble. The player has the option of killing or abandoning her. The second choice will result in the infection taking effect.
  • If the player decided to wake her, then Laa-Laa will be infected and hostile. The player will have to collect the eight custards while avoiding Laa-Laa, who is blind but attentive to movements. The Guardian will then prompt Laa-Laa to hit a pillar so that she gets crushed. The player additionally has the option of killing her or abandoning her.
Chapter 3 — “Run Away”

Once inside the Satellite Station, the Guardian finds the dead bodies of the engineers who worked there. With the facility apparently devoid of all presence, the Guardian finds a single survivor; Ron. The latter notifies the former about a chainsaw-wielding headless green monster who entered the building and murdered almost everyone. Unfortunately for the latter, the chainsaw-wielding mutant eventually finds and dismembers him.

In search of the key-card that would give him access to the Secret Center, the Guardian begins to experience hallucinations about his former subjects. With the key-card in hand, he is confronted by the headless mutant, who turns out to be Dipsy. The protagonist spontaneously thinks of luring him at the entrance, where there is a lethal security system. Dipsy, clearly unresponsive, rushes between the security lasers and dies as a result.

The Guardian acquires the weapon from Dipsy’s corpse and steps down to the basement. He meets Noo-noo, who reveals to be the one behind the infection. No matter what the player says, the blue vacuum sends The Announcer to fight against The Guardian.

Finale

After the battle against the Announcer, the Guardian successfully communicates to the Military, and proceeds to overtake Noo-noo at the station entry. The latter will give him the opportunity to join his plan.

If Guardian denies to join Noo-noo, Po will be summoned to eliminate the protagonist. Two fates are possible after this event:

  • The Guardian will canonically die if he loses during the last phase of the battle.
  • The Guardian will survive by finishing off Po and then destroying Noo-noo.

If Guardian accepts to follow Noo-noo, both will head to the Custard Facility. Two fates are possible after this event:

  • The Guardian will turn into an infected if he accepts to consume the offered custard.
  • The Guardian will be pushed into the Custard Supply by Po, lose his legs and turn into a legless reborn, if he denies to consume the custard.

Multiplayer

Just like in Slendytubbies 2D, The Guardian is replaced by “The Player” whose fur, hat, and antenna can be customized. The Guardian himself appears in the Collect and Versus modes of the Custard Facility as the “Evil Guardian”, and the Reject Facility as “The Crawler”.

Like other enemies, The Guardian moves to the custard that is nearest to the player and patrols around until the player moves to another custard. He notices the player either by the latter being in his field of vision, or by close proximity, and start chasing the player until a certain distance separates them. He will try to hit the protagonist if they stand beside him, killing every player within range. Both mutations pose little threat due to their slow attacks, but the rather cramped nature of some areas can compensate for them.

The Guardian appears in Survival mode as the boss of the Custard Facility during the day only, and Reject Facility, respectively. His “evil” state can use three special abilities named “Dark Shot”, “Dark Spikes”, and “Shadow Blast”, whereas his legless state can use “Dark Shot” and “Shadow Tornado”.

For more detailed information, see his Survival profile.

The Guardian appears in Sandbox mode as an available enemy or ally, and a playable character. A mugshot of his healthy status represents the player.

For more detailed information, see Sandbox.

The Apocalypse DLC

The Guardian, along with SGT. Miles and Anne, go down to a platform near the Teletubby Creation Machine. Miles asks him to look for a way to reach the machine. The main protagonist firstly checks the right corridor where he has an hallucination about a big black figure, as well as being brought into his realm for a few seconds. He returns to sanity after “the attack”.

The white teletubby needs to obtain two items to lock pick the door on the left: he finds a lock-pick in a box and the sergeant lends him his knife. The Guardian successfully picks the lock and goes down the stairs, where he has numerous hallucinations of various teletubbies, thereby altering the stairs to resemble non-identical locations. Once the Guardian enter the room in which the machine lays, he passes out for ten minutes only to be reawaken. Later, the Guardian tries to use Tobby’s key-card to access the machine’s terminal to deactivate it.

Slendytubbies: Worlds

Like previous games, The Guardian is replaced by “The Player” whose fur and hat can be customized. The Guardian himself is exclusive to Sandbox mode, where he can be an enemy, an ally, and a playable character. He moves towards one player and has the ability to teleport to a nearby location. He will execute a physical attack when close, and can use a special ability when distant.

Trivia

General

  • The Guardian is one of the three most recurring characters in the Slendytubbies series — the others are Tinky Winky and Dipsy.
  • The community tends to use “Walten” as a name for the Guardian. Sean Toman and Santikun had stated multiple times that the protagonist’s name is meant to be the player’s name[5].
  • The Guardian is one of the four characters who can have multiple mutations. The others are Tinky Winky, Dipsy, and Po.
    • However, uniquely for him, his mutations are alternative to each other as well as being determinant.

Slendytubbies 2D

  • The Crawler was at first believed to be a separate character, before being confirmed in Slendytubbies III to be actually a mutation of the Guardian.
  • According to Sean Toman, the Crawler was created as a “What if The Guardian got corrupted?” idea.
  • The Crawler was designed by Aythadis.

Slendytubbies III

  • Like characters in physical conditions that are considered to be “pre-mutations” or “early phases”, The Guardian and Tinky Winky both have a simplistic design. They share the same animation too.
  • He is using the same chase track as the Shadow Tubby.
  • The Crawler uses the parasite model and animations from the “Parazite Slider” of the Unity Asset Store.
    • An almost identical model to the former Crawler model is still featured in Campaign.
  • His legless mutation may be regarded to be a more advanced type of mutation, since his design is more monstrous-looking. He is also a bit more dangerous.
  • It is unclear if he still has an antenna under the hat.
  • The Guardian is the only known teletubby to have become a reborn not by consuming an infected custard, but rather by having contact with it. He may have accidentally ate some custard when he fell into the supply.

Slendytubbies: Worlds

  • This is the first game to feature the Guardian with a minor, optional role.
